Holidays are meant to be fun, relaxing and an escape from the reality of working 40+ hours a week. You want it to start in the best way possible! Matt and I have recently come back from a week away in the beautiful Zante island in Greece. We decided to start our holiday in the least stressful way and stay the night at the airport at Bloc Hotel Gatwick. We have never stayed over at the airport before but since we booked the earliest flight out (5.50am!) we thought we would try it. Gatwick is the furthest airport from ours so it would mean leaving to drive there around 1am. Driving throughout the night and being tired for a full day of exploring didn’t sound too appealing. The time could have been used as valuable sleeping time!
We were intrigued to try out the Bloc Hotel because of its location. Situated right on the South Terminal of Gatwick. You really can’t get much closer to the boarding gates and security! A lot of the other hotels at the airport are around the car parks or a 10 min walk away. Bloc Hotel is literally inside the airport along with the restaurants and shops before going through to security. This obviously meant even more sleeping time (yay). Plus, in the morning it wouldn’t be such a rush from our room to get to boarding. As the room is so close to the terminal you get a great view of the runway! Being able to see the planes take off and come in to land was amazing.
The hotel has Boots, Pret and Marks and Spencers close by for easy snacks or last minute holiday bits. If you are looking for a sit down meal and drinks you can also go to Giraffe and Wetherspoons which are a short walk away.
You can see from the website that they say they are an affordable luxury with “no frills or fuss” hotel. The rooms are spotlessly clean, tidy, cosy and have all that you need without any added fussy extras. You can see that they had thought of all the little details and it has everything you would want from a room without being too over the top! From a king size bed with luxurious bed sheets and monsoon shower, to ambient mood lighting. The rooms are modern with a futuristic feel as most of the technology is controlled by a touch screen tablet, which is attached to the wall by the bed. You can shut the blinds, change the temperature, turn on the TV and turn on / off the lights – all from the touch screen! There are multiple different types of rooms to choose from. Double rooms, studios, bunk beds and family rooms – great for any kind of traveller.
Bloc Hotel have a wet room inside every room for the bathroom. Along with several storage spaces to hold luggage and hang up any coats or items of clothing. The bed is also huge and extremely comfortable, giving you a lovely, deep sleep. Exactly what you need before an early flight and long day travelling!
When staying at Bloc Hotel Gatwick you can get there using all the usual public transport – busses, trains, coaches etc. We decided to make our journey by driving. Gatwick airport has car parks but Bloc Hotel also offer their own Valet Parking. We went for their Valet Parking and it actually worked out at a saving of £10 for a weeks parking in their car park compared to the airports standard car park. We paid £55 and dropped it off on the Thursday night and picked it up on the following weeks Friday morning. The car park scans your car from several angles before entering so you are able to feel reassured that you can check once its returned for any damages or scratches. You then fill in a few simple forms, hand over your key and collect when arriving back from your holiday!
*You do need to book Valet Parking a minimum of 24 hours of arriving.
Checking out of Bloc Hotel was quite possibly the smoothest and easiest check out service we have ever used! You literally take all your belongings with you to the reception and drop you key in the key bowl. Simple!
It really did make the start to our holiday so much more enjoyable being able to relax and have dinner at the airport. Knowing we were only a few minutes away from security and the departure lounge when catching our flight, and not having to worry about being stuck in traffic and rushing through passport control! I think we will be looking to stay at Bloc Hotel whenever we fly from Gatwick.
